The City of Annandale offers a wide variety of services to its residents. These include recreation, transportation and public works. It is important to learn more about all the city has to offer and how you can get involved.

Recreation Park

The City of Alexandria has 18 parks and greenways for residents and visitors to enjoy. These include greenways, designed parks, picnic areas, and natural open space. In addition, the City has several parks that are managed by the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Some of the parks operated by the City of Alexandria are Lake Accotink, Mill Creek Park, Backlick Park, Willow Woods Park, and Valley Crest Park. The Fairfax County Public Library is also a popular attraction.

The Parks for People Plan was approved by the City Council on February 23, 2015. This plan replaces Chapter 6 of the Comprehensive Plan. It sets priorities for park and open space projects. According to the Plan, the goals are to increase the number of parks, create more green space, improve accessibility, and provide a wide variety of amenities for people of all ages.

The Park Commission is an advisory body to the City Council that provides recommendations on recreational issues. The Commission’s work includes studying the needs of the parks and trails system, making recommendations, and submitting projects to the City Council.

Public works

The Public Works department is responsible for maintaining all township roads, buildings, and parks. They also operate the Division of Public Transit and Hudson Valley Regional Airport. In addition to maintaining township roadways, they perform all necessary maintenance on municipal vehicles, including plows.

They also do an annual leaf collection program, which includes collecting over 1500 cubic yards of leaves in two months. Their other responsibilities include conducting a full complement of signal maintenance inspections and upgrading Ward 1 streetlights to LED lighting and C-19 Sidewalk Cafe Permits.

One of their latest projects is a new water treatment plant. This project will make Annandale more sustainable, improve the quality of water and ensure that Annandale residents have clean drinking water.

Another major project is the replacement of water lines that are 85 years old. These pipes are in need of replacing and the Department of Public Works is in the process of doing so. It is estimated that this project will be finished in 2006.

The American Public Works Association is a national organization that recognizes public works agencies that exceed best practices. The Fairfax County Public Works Department has been accredited by the prestigious group.
